Nationwide - The writing-directing debut of Gavin Wiesen, "The Art of
Getting By" is halfway endearing in its semi-amateurishness, plagued by all
the mistakes that can come from limited-resource indie filmmaking while
overflowing with the clichés inherent in design-by-committee studio fare.

Select Cities - "Beautiful Boy" is a frank, melancholy drama, but it's not
morose. Like 2010's "Rabbit Hole" before it, the film's depiction of a
married couple in emotional peril rings true rather than maudlin, sustained
at a riveting pitch through the consummately raw, sympathetic performances
of its two leads.

Nationwide - The umpteenth comic book to be made into a splashy summer
popcorn extravaganza, "Green Lantern" returns audiences yet again to Origin
Story Central, where the fine details might be different but the plot
trajectory is very much the same. One has to wonder if all these superhero
tales were created by way of "Mad Libs."

Nationwide - A particularly plain, patly penned picture preoccupied with
penguin poop. It's pedestrian pabulum, too prosaic for preteens and too
plodding and progressively predictable for pubescent patrons. "Mr. Popper's
Penguin" is a flavorless, out-of-touch trifle without an idea in the world
how to captivate its audience, young or old.
