some early movie choices for the weekend....

Opening Mid-Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/11_debt.htm> The Debt
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A remake of a 2007 Israeli film of the same name, "The Debt" is
a lukewarm thriller without the depth, impact or meaning one expects from an
Oscar contender. By not delving deeply enough into what this trio of agents
must psychologically go through based on the deceptive choices they've made,
director John Madden never escapes the shallow, decidedly inconsequential
end of the pool.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/11_redstate.htm> Red State
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Available OnDemand Sept 1st - If "Red State" isn't necessarily Kevin Smith's
best picture (for me, 1997's "Chasing Amy" still holds that title), it most
certainly is his best-directed, signaling a vast leap forward for the
filmmaker. It's a smart, mature film from a man who, now, has artistically
come-of-age.

An average weekend for the movies....

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/11_bellflower.htm> Bellflower
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - As a writer-director-actor-producer-editor making his
feature debut on all of the above, Evan Glodell has an undeniable
filmmaker's eye. It's well-made, yes, but also annoyingly arch,
self-absorbed, and contrived. "Bellflower" is a motion picture most viewers
will probably find themselves admiring more than actually liking.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/11_brightonrock.htm> Brighton Rock
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities (OnDemand Aug 31) - A revisionist's adaptation of the classic
novel, "Brighton Rock" moves the setting from the 1930s to 1964, but
otherwise gets to the heart of its tragic underpinnings. Titillatingly open
to interpretation and acted with standout gusto by virtual unknowns Sam
Riley and Andrea Riseborough, the doomed romance is where the film earns a
sneaky indelible force.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/11_dbaotd.htm> Don't Be Afraid of
the Dark
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Appreciably R-rated but never terribly gory, the scare factor
mostly comes from the sound of malevolent whispers and the anticipation of
who—or what—is lurking in the shadows. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" works
its way under the skin with a sophistication not often seen anymore in
today's horror pictures. It might be a tad naïve, but it's also elegant and
suitably sinister where it counts.

>>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/j/11_juliaseyes.htm> Julia's Eyes
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - "Julia's Eyes" gathers unmistakable inspiration
from Alfred Hitchcock, Henri-Georges Clouzot and Brian De Palma, and this
firm grasp on all things suspenseful is enough to overcome a film that, when
it all comes down to it, is more a conventional cat-and-mouse game than a
truly satisfying or ingenious mystery.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/o/11_ouridiotbrother.htm> Our Idiot
Brother
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The story rarely takes time to breathe or bothers to explore
with any depth the key relationships that the movie is supposedly all about.
What is left are some amusing situations and a lead performance better than
it should be under the amateurish circumstances. It's a film that, simply
put, is difficult to care for or get excited about.

Well, there is one movie you won't be seeing this weekend............

Don't think MovieBoy liked Conan the Barbarian…………..

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/c/11_conan.htm> Conan the Barbarian
Zero Stars (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Conan the Barbarian" is a disaster from one end to the next.
With not a single positive element to call attention to, the film is so
calamitously unprofessional it's as if half-minded vagrants found a dinged-
up camera next to a few hundred bucks on the street, pulled together a cast
of needy, out-of-work actors, and went to town. A vacant, sexist, soul-
smothering trial of tribulations.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/c/11_conan.htm> Read the Full Review
>>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/11_frightnight.htm> Fright Night
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The rare remake that gets things exactly right, tweaking the
setting, the background details, and the era while staying true to the
spirit and soul that made the first film worth updating to begin with. A
fun, spooky, violent but not gross romp, this "Fright Night," like the one
that came twenty-six years ago, knows precisely what it is, and how to do
it.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/o/11_oneday.htm> One Day
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - There's never enough time. Doesn't that always seem to be the
case? What "One Day" lacks in palpable romantic chemistry between Anne
Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, both actors make up for it with their own
personal effervescence. Audiences not familiar with the novel will be
divided, but "One Day" stays true to itself and the people it follows.

>>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/11_spykids4.htm> Spy Kids: All the
Time in the World
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Reverting back to the charms of the original and then possibly
slightly surpassing it, director Robert Rodriguez proves to have put
thought and care into developing this new story and making it about more
than squeezing extra dollars out of a long-in-the-tooth series. In its own
eager-to-please way, the film is cheerful and valiant.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/11_atrocious.htm> Atrocious
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

In Select AMC Theaters Aug 17th - It is obvious that the picture's creation
grew from writer-director Fernando Berreda Luna's access to a really great,
spooky, secluded location rather than the other way around. All the same,
it is a great, spooky, secluded location-one that viewers will not soon
forget. "Atrocious" is far from tops in the annals of "found-footage"
thrillers, but it does know how to wrestle with expectations and ratchet
suspense when it gets down to it.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/11_fd5.htm> Final Destination 5
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Some actual, honest-to-goodness thought and care went into
"Final Destination 5," a sentiment not often found when it comes to the
fifth installment in any increasingly ridiculous slasher franchise.
Delivering solid production values and creative special effects that, on
both accounts, are a huge step up from the overblown CGI artifice of its
more slapdash precursor, "Final Destination 5" is decidedly the best sequel
of the bunch.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/11_fd5.htm> Read the Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/11_help.htm> The Help
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Usually when people describe movies as ones in which "you'll
laugh, you'll cry," it is code for films that try too hard to be cute and
dramatically manipulative. While watching "The Help," it is a safe bet that
most viewers will laugh and cry, but here it's only code for a motion
picture that so staggeringly captures the humor and sorrow that comes with
being human and existing in a world that is not always fair. "The Help" is
a beautiful story, beautifully told.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/11_30minutesorless.htm> 30 Minutes
or Less
Zero Stars (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A profane, gags-a'plenty action-comedy played predominately
for raunch and giggles. Or so one would assume. The trouble is, "30 Minutes
or Less" hasn't a solitary laugh to its name. As the woefully misguided
plot to nowhere presses on, the film frequently forgets it's even trying to
be funny. "30 Minutes or Less" is distasteful and putrid, so disillusioned
and amateurish that it can't even be bothered to properly wrap up its loose
plot treads. Instead, when it finally hits a brick wall, it simply gives up
altogether and ends.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

The Change-Up
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - For all of its gross-out humor—some of it works, some of it doesn't—the movie listens to, respects, and cares about its characters. Scattershot though the narrative is, at its core is a certain disarming sweetness. "The Change-Up" is blue and bawdy as all get-out, but it turns out this is just a ruse for the heart hiding underneath.

The Devil's Double
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - It's an intriguing story, but one that is only occasionally dramatically sound. When it meanders in the third act for too long just as it should be wrapping up only calls attention to this deficiency. Nevertheless, Cooper's awards-bound turn is impossible to turn away from. Through sheer force and vigor, he ensures that "The Devil's Double" remains a film of frequently electric interest.

The Future
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - For her sophomore effort, "The Future," Miranda July has narrowed in her gaze but refused to soften the esoteric edges of her sensibilities. The picture is a heady conversation piece, nearly infinite in its number of big thematic ideas. For sheer ambition alone, it's worth seeing. Boy, does it have problems though.

The Myth of the American Sleepover
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - Interweaving and narrowly connecting, the characters in "The Myth of the American Sleepover" stand as a microcosm of the teenage experience in Anytime, USA. Set over a 24-hour period, this is but a snapshot of their lives. As such, it's unforced and beautiful.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Might viewers be turned off by such a potentially hopeless finale, or will it leave them eagerly awaiting what a possible sequel might hold? No matter, the picture should be commended for following the apocalyptic plot threads to their logical destination. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" boasts enough skill and showmanship to act as a respectable franchise upstart if the studio is inclined to do so.
