Beat the heat. Check out a movie

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
The Heat
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy work deliciously as a unit. Because of them—and the savvy filmmakers on the opposite side of the camera—"The Heat" is worth running out to see for anyone who dares lament that they don't make funny movies like they used to.

Maniac
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities - An effectively disconcerting horror picture. Warts and all, "Maniac" still does what it should, digging under the skin and never for a second shying away from the grim realities of a protagonist who's not only an antagonist as well, but a violent sociopath.

White House Down
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - A political disaster movie that also, little by little, turns into a cinematic disaster. Movies like "White House Down" don't have to be beacons of authenticity as long as they treat their audience with a modicum of respect. This one doesn't.

Coming this week

Opening This Week:

Berberian Sound Studio
★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - Aims to cross David Lynch with Lucio Fulci, and, by
the last third, it's a toss-up whether or not the mind-bending narrative is
meant to be understood at all. "Berberian Sound Studio" is definitely a
curiosity piece, but one gets the sneaking suspicion it wasn't also meant to
be an inert one.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/13_blingring.htm> The Bling Ring
★★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A joyride as dangerously thrilling as it is vividly disturbing.
Provocative and beautifully crafted, radiating with another one of the
auteur's typically flawless soundtrack compilations, "The Bling Ring" brings
insight and hypnotic urgency to a story not to be believed if it weren't so
unbelievably true.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/m/13_monstersuniversity.htm> Monsters
University
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - This is Pixar's most assured and even original picture in
years, deeper and more soulful than its predecessor as it traces the
beginning of the friendship between monsters Mike and Sulley. "Monsters
University" is, so far, this summer's animated family film to beat. Welcome
back, Pixar. You've been missed.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/w/13_worldwarz.htm> World War Z
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - It's a competent but messy film, leading to a lame concluding
"this is only the beginning" voice-over narration setting up a sequel (and
one that may never come if this one doesn't do huge worldwide numbers).
Sadly, "World War Z" does not provide a good enough reason for one to care
about a continuation.

America's worst charities

A real eye opener. Think twice the next time you phone rings and they tug
at your heart strings!

Opening this week (Part Two)

Opening This Week (Part Two):

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/13_hatchet3.htm> Hatchet III
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - Are there ways to make another sequel? For sure.
Until then, this is a satisfying and faithful capper to a series that was
made by true-blue horror buffs as a love letter for true-blue horror buffs.
Job well done.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/m/13_manofsteel.htm> Man of Steel
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The film is neither fun nor dramatically potent; it's an
oppressively dour, increasingly overblown onslaught of enough pyrotechnics
to seemingly blow up the planet, mistaking serious faces and shaky-cammed
anarchy for what it so desperately needed most: a sense of wonder and a
beating heart.

Opening this week

Opening This Week (Part One):

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/13_thisistheend.htm> This Is the End
★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - It's a shame "This Is the End" doesn't know how IQ-meltingly
terrible it is, because the dismantling of the project before it ever saw
the light of day could have saved a whole lot of people from wasting two
hours of their life.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/v/13_vhs2.htm> V/H/S/2
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD Now, Select Cities July 12 - Never afraid to journey into the blackest
of hearts, the filmmakers involved in "V/H/S/2" have given the project their
best shot, and it shows. The truth is out there, all right, and horror buffs
officially have another good reason to stay at home, curled up in the dark
in front of the television on a Friday night.
