A football option for New Year's Day

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_promisedland.htm> Promised Land
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - "Promised Land" moves at an unassuming, surprisingly
intoxicating pace, aware of the ebbs and flows and overall qualities that
come with living outside the big cities. If only for a few hours, it's a
place worth visiting.

The best and worst of 2012

<http://www.dustinputman.com/essays_2012bestworst.htm> The Year in Review:
2012's Best and Worst

If we're going strictly by numbers, 2012 was the best year for cinema in at
least a decade. This was a deeply reassuring year at the movies, and one can
only hope this mini-resurgence of inspiration will continue into 2013.

A movie instead of football?

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/12_djangounchained.htm> Django
Unchained
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The late holiday season's most dizzyingly imaginative and
thoroughly pleasing release, an end-of-year jewel as chock-full of sizzling
performances as it is bursting with busted knee caps and spurting innards.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_parentalguidance.htm> Parental
Guidance
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Crystal and Midler class it up as much as they can and the
movie's central message about not taking your loved ones for granted is
simple and sweet. It's just such a shame "Parental Guidance" is otherwise
so darn dumb.

One the gifts are opened and stomachs full-go see a movie

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/i/12_impossible.htm> The Impossible
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - "The Impossible" is thoughtful and well-made, but it also
might be a little too simplistic and staightforward for its own good. One
could imagine this same story, albeit with less polished effects work,
telecast as a cable movie.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/j/12_jackreacher.htm> Jack Reacher
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - If "Jack Reacher" falls into more predictable patterns, it
does open up some potentially fascinating avenues to take the title
character if this were to turn into an ongoing franchise. The possibilities
are there; now let's see if there's an audience for this retro thriller
throwback.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/12_rustandbone.htm> Rust and Bone
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - An unconventional love story between an unreliable father
and a victim of a killer whale attack, "Rust and Bone" positions the wrong
person as the lead protagonist. The film lays its heart on the line, but
its focal point is off.

Still time to make the cinema

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/12_hobbit1.htm> The Hobbit: An
Unexpected Journey
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - There are fortunately a handful of strong moments and
show-stopping set-pieces, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule
in a film that is exhausting in all the wrong ways.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/12_troublewiththetruth.htm> The
Trouble with the Truth
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - A mature, finally poignant adult romance about the nature of
true love and second chances. Don't let this small but potent little gem
pass by.

for this weekend

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_playingforkeeps.htm> Playing for
Keeps
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - An acceptable but very slim romantic comedy. The filmmakers
earn a few grace points for their mostly pleasing ensemble cast and not too
much dumbing-down when it comes to the treatment of the characters, but
these things can only go so far when everything else feels as immensely
familiar as it does.
