Fall cinema?

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/12_hoteltransylvania.htm> Hotel
Transylvania
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Hotel Transylvania" is only sporadically diverting as far as
computer-animated family films go. Viewed strictly as a silly pic for kids,
the subject matter alone will no doubt hold attention spans, but the gags
are rarely worth more than a vague smirk or smile.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/l/12_looper.htm> Looper
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - More cerebral than grand-standingly emotional, "Looper" earns
its placement as a bold new vision in the science-fiction genre through its
equipped telling of story and minimal need for audience hand-holding. A
fresh spin on well-versed topics suddenly made new again.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_perksofbeingawallflower.htm> The
Perks of Being a Wallflower
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A year-in-the-life snapshot one doesn't want to see end, "The
Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a smart movie, passionately made, that will
speak to teenagers and adults equally, and on different planes. One of the
truest coming-of-age films in recent memory.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_pitchperfect.htm> Pitch Perfect
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities, Nationwide next Friday - An audience-pleasing home run that
ought to expand well beyond die-hard fans of "Glee." Though it might sound
like a hacky platitude, don't be surprised if "Pitch Perfect" leaves a fair
share of its audiences outwardly cheering.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/w/12_wontbackdown.htm> Won't Back Down
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Won't Back Down" isn't without a few seams in the script, but
these are the exceptions and certainly not the rules in a stirring drama
that finds a way to bring insight to its real-life issues without talking
down to viewers or growing preachy.

BLACKBERRY

For those of you who still use one........like me........I just spent two
hours with Verizon and they did everything possible to get my device to
start sending and receiving emails. No such luck. NOW, after all this
time, Blackberry owns up the fact that they are having issues and they
should be fixed in a few hours. Why didn't you just say that to begin with
and I wouldn't have lost two hours on a Saturday afternoon!!???

A cinema weekend for some

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/12_arbitrage.htm> Arbitrage
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - The tastefully oily fictional writing-directing debut
of Nicholas Jarecki, "Arbitrage" is a well-crafted dramatic thriller with a
rare braininess and a deeply unsettling undercurrent.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/12_helloimustbegoing.htm> Hello I
Must Be Going
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - As compassionately written by Sarah Koskoff and directed
with a gentle, incisive eye by Todd Louiso, "Hello I Must Be Going"
flourishes first and foremost through its lost and aching protagonist.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/12_residentevil5.htm> Resident
Evil: Retribution
★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Proves without a shadow of a doubt that this franchise is just
jerking viewers around as it paces in circles. "Resident Evil: Retribution"
is more of the same, sometimes to a laughable degree, but it does better
the first, second and fourth installments with a few surges of inspiration.

First fall weekend may be a good one for the movies!

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/12_bachelorette.htm> Bachelorette
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - Fiercely independent-minded while retaining an
up-tempo, mainstream pace, "Bachelorette" is as black as comedy can get
while still ending up a crowd-pleaser. Straddling a very fine line, but
never toppling over, the film's future cult status and high rewatchability
factor are all but guaranteed.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/12_rec3.htm> [REC] 3: Génesis
★★ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - Going for laughs more often than scares and not
particularly furthering the original premise in any substantial way, "[REC]
3: Génesis" comes off as a rather pointless lark. It certainly doesn't come
close to earning the revery of its moniker.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/12_rec3.htm> Read the Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/v/12_vhs.htm> V/H/S
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Now OnDemand, In Select Cities Oct 5th - As is apt to be the case with
anthologies, not every part of "V/H/S" is equally successful. Taken as a
whole, however, it is a grab-bag of clever, diverse frights. It's uneven but
perfectly fun, an ideal movie to sit and watch in a dark room on a Friday
night.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/v/12_vhs.htm> Read the Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/w/12_words.htm> The Words
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Confusing flowery, needless tangents for complexity, the movie
loses its way to excess, turning a provocative, low-key think piece into a
structurally exasperating trifle that ends up saying far less than initially
meets the eye. Sometimes, less is more. "The Words" is one of those times.

Better late than never.......

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/12_foragoodtimecall.htm> For a Good
Time, Call...
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - A smutty feature-length sitcom with heart, "For a Good
Time, Call..." is like a well-cast, middle-of-the-road television series;
it's pleasant enough while passing the time, but also so insignificant that
it's only too easy to forget. Lauren Anne Miller and Ari Graynor are a step
above the pedestrian content they have to work with.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/12_foragoodtimecall.htm> Read the
Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/l/12_lawless.htm> Lawless
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - At once heartfelt and wrenching, quietly ominous and literally
cutthroat, a western-cum-gangster-saga in a vein both classic and modern.
Arriving right at the tail-end of August, "Lawless" shouldn't dare be
overlooked. It is the ideal capper on the summer movie season, yes, but
also an early end-of-the-year awards contender.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_possession.htm> The Possession
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - When Danish director Ole Bornedal gets it right, his know-how
of the genre, of the importance of building atmosphere and character over
easy, predictable jump scares, recalls a lush, adult-minded style all but
missing since the 1970s. Bornedal blesses the mundane with rising tension
and the out-of-the-ordinary with unsettling gall.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/12_sleepwalkwithme.htm> Sleepwalk
with Me
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Difficult to resist or put down because of the level of
care and raw earnestness that has been brought to its telling. The movie
hinges upon how well writer-director-actor Mike Birbiglia is able to carry
the material and how easily the viewer sympathizes with him. Fortunately,
he's as sure of a natural in front of the camera as he is behind it.
