Mirror Mirror could be the winner this weekend

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/12_boy.htm> Boy
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Written and directed by Taika Waititi, the film is a light-
hearted coming-of-age story of the sort seen plenty of times before. Think
of it as a less acerbic "Napoleon Dynamite" for the pre-teen set. "Boy" is
amusing on occasion, but there isn't much verve to it and its attempts at
charm come off forced.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/m/12_mirrormirror.htm> Mirror Mirror
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The advertising and marketing teams at Relativity Media
responsible for creating the trailers and TV spots for "Mirror Mirror"
should be fired at once. What appeared at first glance as an embarrassment
for visionary filmmaker Tarsem, is actually a quick-witted, mouth-watering
feast for the eyes that tweaks but lovingly adheres to the magical,
foreboding soul of Brothers Grimm.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/w/12_wrathofthetitans.htm> Wrath of
the Titans
★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Overlong at 99 minutes, "Wrath of the Titans" follows the same
predictable formula as its predecessor as Perseus is pitted against a
cavalcade of beasts. With sturdier momentum, it might have worked on a pulp
level, but director Jonathan Liebesman grows lazy very quickly, each
challenge less thrilling and formidable than the last.

Hungry for Hunger Games?

Opens Friday:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/12_hungergames.htm> The Hunger Games
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Should please fans, but leave them wondering what an alternate
version might have looked like that wasn't afraid to get its hands dirty.
Even at 142 minutes that fly by, "The Hunger Games" could afford a tougher
treatment to go along with its heady thematic contemplations. Let's hope
the filmmakers were only getting warmed up over what's to come.

A cinema weekend!!!

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/c/12_casademipadre.htm> Casa de mi
Padre
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Wide audiences might not know what to make of "Casa de mi
Padre" at first, but rest assured it will grow on all but the most sour of
souls. It's difficult to resist a movie, after all, that shares the same
common DNA as "Mystery Science Theater 3000."

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/12_detachment.htm> Detachment
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - Let's make things clear; "Detachment" is not
another inspirational feel-good tale about a teacher and their students
like "Stand and Deliver," "Dangerous Minds," or "Freedom Writers." It's
disturbing, it's uncompromising, it's understandably urgent, and it's
absolutely crucial.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/j/12_jeff.htm> Jeff, Who Lives at Home
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Its low-key manner, thoughtful nature, and comparative
eccentricities may perplex fans who expect this to be a raunchy mainstream
comedy, but for audiences tired of the same old thing and willing to take a
chance, they'll find something altogether more special.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/12_21jumpstreet.htm> 21 Jump Street
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "21 Jump Street" is loose and meandering, but it also knows
how and when to entertain. By taking the general premise of its source
material, but otherwise doing its own thing, the film is able to make a
name for itself beyond the title.

Spring forward with a movie this weekend

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/12_atm.htm> ATM
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Now OnDemand - Select Cities 4/6 - There are too many forehead-slapping
moments, too much overt contrivance, and an anticlimactic conclusion that
doesn't add up to as much as one hopes or expects. The actors, however, are
amiable enough that it's too bad they don't have the luck to be in a
romantic comedy.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/12_atm.htm> Read the Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/12_friendswithkids.htm> Friends with
Kids
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A bewitching romance about more than a boy and a girl, and a
drama about rearing kids that goes blessedly beyond the black and the white.
"Friends with Kids" ultimately feels like vintage Woody Allen, and that's a
very good thing, indeed.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/f/12_friendswithkids.htm> Read the
Full Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/j/12_johncarter.htm> John Carter
★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "John Carter" is an oversized beast of clunky storytelling,
groan-inducing screenwriting, and heavy-handed filmmaking, a blending of the
incoherent and the thoroughly uninvolving that left this viewer counting the
minutes until the punishment would all be over.

Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/12_salmonfishing.htm> Salmon Fishing
in the Yemen
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Based on the novel by Paul Torday, "Salmon Fishing in the
Yemen" is inoffensively there at best and outright dull and insignificant at
worst. This could very well be early 2012's poster child for
neither-here-nor-there mediocrity.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/12_salmonfishing.htm> Read the Full
Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/12_silenthouse.htm> Silent House
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Silent House" weaves an intoxicating spell of dread. As the
focal point for the film's full 85-minute running time, Elizabeth Olsen is a
rapturous force. Remake or not, the provocative "Silent House" has been born
anew.
<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/12_silenthouse.htm> Read the Full
Review >>

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/12_thousandwords.htm> A Thousand
Words
★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - At some point in its inception, "A Thousand Words" might have
meant well. What has reached the screen, however, is unrecognizable, a
desperate, amateurish trifle of confused tonal shifts, ill-advised editing,
and soppy, disingenuous grand-standing. It's not the least bit funny or
touching, and it all goes down about as smoothly as cyanide laced with
rusted nails.

What not to see this weekend!!

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/l/12_lorax.htm> The Lorax
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A literal tree-hugger of a film that will have cynics rolling
their eyes, but so what? Let them roll. "The Lorax" is a fun, touching
delight, dripping with aesthetic wonder and the boundless reaches where only
animated films can go. Dr. Seuss would be proud of this one.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_projectx.htm> Project X
Zero Stars (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Classless, mean-spirited, repugnant, deplorable, off-puttingly
sleazy, and thoroughly contemptible. "Project X" is so inane, so bereft of a
point, so left wanting for a thought in its shrunken doll-sized little head
that it's difficult to accept as anything other than an elaborate prank.
