Theory VS. reality

Perhaps one should spend time in a kitchen cooking to see what is practical before writing about it.  An interesting article on kitchen trends.  Keep in mind the operative word “trend”.  Frankly, the team at BJGE LLC just doesn’t see it.  But for what it’s worth……..

XMAS movies

Opening Christmas Day:

Her
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - A genre-busting romantic drama of both generous whimsy and heart-crumbling beauty, "Her" isn't quite like any other film out there. One of 2013's most affecting, intimate love stories.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" doesn't resonate with the sheer force and impact it could have, and yet it still does make a truthful, comforting impression at its own pace, on its own terms.

The Wolf of Wall Street
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Darkly funny, sexually explicit and fearlessly disturbing all at once, anchored by Leonardo DiCaprio in a deliriously brilliant performance. If anyone still has doubts that he is one of the all-time great Hollywood actors, "The Wolf of Wall Street" is his resounding confirmation.

weekend movies

Opening This Week:

Out of the Furnace
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Standing next to something like 2013's similar but radically more complex and thematically loaded "Prisoners," "Out of the Furnace" is an unambitious exploitation flick that just so happens to have A-list actors and production values.

Another Retro-Review:

Madea's Big Happy Family (2011)
½ (out of ★★★★)

It isn't the worst film to feature that law-breaking, right-and-ready, tell-it-exactly-like-it-is matriarch, but it is the sloppiest. "Madea's Big Happy Family" is a facetious title; there's not a happy one in the bunch. Eventually, neither is the viewer.

Thanksgiving movies

Opening This Week:

Frozen
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Frozen" is lighthearted and funny when it wants to be—true to form for the best of Disney's animated films, humor derives timelessly from clever writing and keen character interactions rather than a stream of pop-cultural references—but its dramatic core is where it gets its strength and durability.

Oldboy
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The puzzle pieces not consistently making sense or adding up becomes a hindrance by the climax, at once too exposition-heavy and taciturn for its own good. If the film's successive missteps are frustrating, though, it is because the rest of "Oldboy" has a dangerously irresistible ambience difficult to deny or resist.

More Retro-Reviews:

I Can Do Bad All By Myself (2009)
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

"I Can Do Bad All By Myself" is too pat by a half during the finale, but Tyler Perry shows a maturity as a filmmaker that would pave the way for arguably his best picture, 2010's "For Colored Girls."

Madea Goes to Jail (2009)
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

A half-silly/half-moralistic story about how it is never too late to turn things around, "Madea Goes to Jail" is as wispy as whipped cream, but also as easy to consume.

Movies this weekend

Opening This Week:

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has far more on its mind than ornate costumes and CGI effects, and this is what finally lifts the movie above its more mundane trappings.

Nebraska
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - At the picture's center are average guys Woody and David, a father and son joined together by so much more than blood. "Nebraska" is a moving little slice-of-life gem, unassumingly big in existential significance.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
Dallas Buyers Club
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities - "Dallas Buyers Club" is a moving, always mature account of a personal story that warrants attention. Breathing crucial vitality into a fallible figure withering away even as he regains his dignity, McConaughey has scarcely, if ever, been better.
The Starving Games
Zero Stars (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities & VOD - A parody of 2012's "The Hunger Games" without a solitary laugh to be mustered, "The Starving Games" is 83 minutes of rancorous stereotyping, lame bathroom gags and aimless, often bafflingly outdated film references.

Thor: The Dark World
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - "Thor: The Dark World" might technically be larger in scope, but it is also grindingly frivolous and pedestrian in the extreme. It isn't an obvious disaster, but its undeniable mediocrity is just as disappointing as if it were outright terrible.

Fall movies this weekend

Opening This Week:
About Time
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - A time-traveling love story between a man and a woman, and a father and a son, "About Time" packs a few emotional wallops into an ethically muddled tale better in its ensemble chemistry than its admittedly meandering narrative.

Ender's Game
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Based on the 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card and adapted for the screen by writer-director Gavin Hood, "Ender's Game" is an acute, surprisingly timely coming-of-age adventure, but one that only truly gets going and takes a turn into deeper, more perceptive thematic territory in the final stretch.

Free Birds
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Poppy and entertaining, this computer-animated jaunt is mighty irreverent, a tonal cousin to the "Shrek" series in the way it appeals to grown-ups privy to all the slyly acerbic jokes going over the younger audience members' heads.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
All Is Lost
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities - Jostling around on the same flat level, spurts of interest coming but few and far between, "All Is Lost" should send one away with a dropped, unsettled stomach. Instead, it doesn't elicit much more than a shrug.
The Counselor
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - "The Counselor" is bleak, bleak, bleak for mainstream studio cinema, but does that really matter when a motion picture is as exquisitely helmed and stirringly envisioned as this one?
Haunter
★★ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities - "Haunter" never completely loses the viewer's interest, but the edgy, enigmatic would-be momentum goes slack in the second half as the slim plot extends to 97 minutes when 80 would have made for a tauter experience.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Works more than it doesn't and moves at a clip rate. If one set-piece isn't working, rest assured that a new and probably better one is minutes away. This is total cinematic junk food, but that doesn't mean it isn't sinfully tasty while it lasts.

United States Postal Service-Anthrax attack-twelve years later

Twelve years ago today, news began breaking that anthrax laden letters had
been detected in the US Mail. For all who mobilized on Columbus Day and
drove down to the L'Enfant Plaza that night, I say thanks. The minutes,
hours, days, months following the attacks were filled with great
uncertainty. Two of our own who came to work to their jobs fell to this
heinous attack. Looking back over the years, little was known about
anthrax then and am not sure any more is known today. Remember, in the
midst of all the dysfunction in Washington DC and a partial government
shutdown, the dedicated men and women of the United States Postal Service
continue to do what they do best-deliver the mail. God Bless 'em and thank
you.

Get out of the rain this weekend

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
Captain Phillips
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide -"Captain Phillips" doesn't have very much to say about the unsettled socioeconomic climate in which it is set, but as a scrupulously devised adventure-thriller, there is enough that works well to overlook its stumbles. At the trusty center is Hanks, anchoring the picture with the captivating, unforced prowess of only the very best thespians in the biz.

Escape from Tomorrow
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities -Subversive, surreal and deliciously stimulating. Part slice-of-life drama, part mind-bending cautionary tale, "Escape from Tomorrow" absorbs the viewer instantly, first as a sort of offbeat, eavesdropping travelogue and then as a hallucinatory saga of broken dreams and adulthood desperation.

Machete Kills
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - A tongue-in-cheek exploitation that manages to be batshit-crazier than the first, but only about half as diverting. Amusing in pockets but not for the long haul, the film tries to be too much at once and ends up somehow being less than what one hopes and expects.

A perfect weekend for a perfect rating. Gravity

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/13_assbackwards.htm> Ass Backwards
★½ (out of ★★★★)

VOD Now, Select Cities 11/8 - Director Chris Nelson's movie starts
promisingly enough, but the buoyant mood deflates when its true colors are
revealed. "Ass Backwards" may have been written by women, but one would
never guess it judging by the evidence onscreen.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/g/13_gravity.htm> Gravity
★★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A revolutionary cinematic leap beyond the stratosphere,
"Gravity" is alarming, intoxicating, eloquent, stomach-tossingly terrifying
and emotionally shattering. Its fluid, seamless, photorealistic depiction
of outer space as breathlessly authentic as, perhaps, any motion picture
that has been made, to date.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/r/13_runnerrunner.htm> Runner Runner
★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - As a thriller, the film is languidly paced and predictable,
low on threat or narrative momentum. As a character drama, it is
superficial and two dimensional, the people onscreen either stick-figure
constructs or too wishy-washy to make an impression.

Opening This Week:
Prisoners
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide -Tough as nails, achingly fallible, and wholly unsparing, the film doesn't let go from its vise grip even after its chillingly provocative final shot. Thematically dense and intelligently crafted, the darkly enthralling "Prisoners" will not easily be forgotten.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
Riddick
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide -"Riddick" is a blah effort, sinking into mediocrity when all involved—the writers, the director, the actors, the behind-the-scenes technical artists—are capable of so much more. Based on the wearisome continued evidence, perhaps Riddick would have been wise to hang up his protective sunglasses for good following "Pitch Black."

Labor Day weekend at the movies

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/13_devilspass.htm> Devil's Pass
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - An overt copycat of 1999's "The Blair Witch Project,"
the picture hitting every single narrative beat of that innovative box-
office phenomenon. There are no two ways about it; "Devil's Pass" is
derivative. Where the film partially redeems itself is in a twisty zinger
of a conclusion that, finally, is not only giddily original, but also
entirely unexpected.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/g/13_getaway.htm> Getaway
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Revved up to a permanently high octane, "Getaway" is an auto-
centric action-thriller so relentless it makes "Fast and Furious 6" look
like "Driving Miss Daisy." The bottom line is there is a heaping helping of
destruction on hand, but it's hard to be too critical when a film dares to
be as preposterous yet flashy as this one.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week (Part Two):
Ain't Them Bodies Saints
★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities - Exasperating in its disjointed pacing, ceaselessly static tempo, and refusal to provide context and development for its nearly comatose characters, this lethargic art-house drama confuses painterly cinematography for overall cinematic distinctiveness.
Monsters Wanted
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Now on DVD - An always engrossing documentary about the ambitious 2011 preparation of the Asylum Haunted Scream Park in Louisville, Kentucky, "Monsters Wanted" is something of a successor to 2002's outstanding "Hell House"—minus all of the religious politics.
The World's End
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - "The World's End" gets things all wrong, its sarcastic humor more often than not limp and its play for drama tone-deaf and overbearing when a lighter touch might have made a greater impact in regards to themes about reluctantly growing up and coming to terms with guilt from the past.
You're Next
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - So superbly conceived and carried out, so draped in tension yet also naturally funny in its tonal command, that it seems nearly impossible not to walk out of the film on a nervy, satisfied high. Horror cinema fans, a word of advice: rally together and absolutely do not let "You're Next" pass you by.

almost the end of summer

    Opening This Week (Part One):

    Drinking Buddies
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD Now, Select Cities Friday - A shrewd, earthy slice-of-life. Small in size yet keenly adept at human observation, films like "Drinking Buddies" are a pleasurable respite from the routine of seeing characters controlled by bigger-than-life plot hooks one can only find in cinema and television.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
    (out of ★★★★)
