Feel like getting out of heat this weekend? Go see a movie.

Opening This Week:

★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Written and directed by Mike Mills with semi-
autobiographical shades from his own life, "Beginners" is meaningful yet
told with a light hand, touching yet a little undernourished. Nevertheless,
the messages the film imparts are valid and succinct without growing
maudlin or preachy.

the NOT Bummer Summer
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - "Supermegatotally thrilladelic" is the lofty tagline
brandishing the poster one-sheet for "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer
Summer." It does not accurately describe the film in question, but then, a
more honest appraisal such as, "Just kind of there," probably wouldn't send
kids or their parents racing to the multiplex.

★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - A coming-of-age story that wants to blend the bittersweet
with the sardonic. It is so self-aware, however, and its lead character so
stringently contrived with hipster 'tude and affectations that it's
difficult to take it seriously and become emotionally invested in the lives
of the people involved.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/11_super8.htm> Super 8
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Certain to go down as one of the most worthwhile and memorable
of this year's big-budget summer tentpoles. "Super 8" has all the requisite
fireworks and pizzazz one expects, but its special weapon-the thing that
helps to separate it from the crowd-is how much it cares. For that,
Hollywood would be wise to take note.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/t/11_trollhunter.htm> Troll Hunter
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand and Select Cities - An ambitious treat of equal parts threat and
whimsy. Bursting with ingenuity and simply stunning to look at, "Troll
Hunter" stands as an example next to 2010's shoestring sensation "Monsters"
of just how much bang indie filmmakers these days can get with their bucks.
