Movies this weekend

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
After Earth
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Inert and curiously unimaginative. This is not the same M. Night Shymalan who gave audiences a reason to shriek in fright one minute and uncontrollably weep the next during "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs." Where has that artist gone? "After Earth" bears the mark of a work-for-hire who has all but given up.

Before Midnight
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities - "Before Midnight" lacks the sweeping romanticism of "Before Sunrise," replaced by the realities of one's day-to-day existence in a world where things don't always turn out the way one imagines, or hopes. Such is life.

Now You See Me
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - A synthetic sleight of hand that divulges plenty of tricks but never quite settles on a satisfactory endgame, "Now You See Me" moves sluggishly through its paces while managing to waste just about every actor in its top-flight ensemble.

Memorial Day 2013

I sat today to pen my thoughts for this Memorial Day. Instead I stumbled on
a piece written in emissourian.com that captures my feelings. I share it
with you in the hope that you will remember all our brave men and women who
served, continue to serve and especially those who died protecting our
freedom.

Memorial Day will be observed all over America Monday. It's a day when we
remember the sacrifices that men and women made for their country.

Through the observances that are held every year on this day, we reflect on
the men and women who wore, and who today, wear the military uniforms of the
United States. Many are not with us. They died on the fields, seas and skies
in combat in other lands. The ones who survived combat often wonder why they
were spared and others were not. It's a nagging thought and there's never an
explanation.

So many of our veterans have passed on with the passing of time.

Perhaps one of the saddest outcomes of war is that many of our military
personnel were reported missing and later they were listed as presumed dead.
The families of these warriors will never know how or exactly where their
loved ones died.

A group of veterans we must never forget for their sacrifices are the ones
in VA hospitals or rest homes. They survived but they wear the wounds of
battle - never to be the same as they once were.

We honor all veterans, not just the ones who were awarded medals and were
recognized for their valor under fire. There are others for whatever reason
were overlooked and they were never recognized for their heroic deeds in
combat. They were many and their comrades in arms recognize them in thoughts
that never die.

To all of our veterans and to all the veterans' organizations for their
staging of memorial services, our nation remembers the sacrifices. Old
soldiers do die but for generation after generation our thoughts of you do
not fade away. Memorial Day is but one day for special thanksgiving for your
sacrifices. For many, Memorial Day is every day!

Don't get fooled with the Big Boss lite step scale

If you are thinking about buying this product-DON'T. It is awful. Ours has
not worked since the second time we stepped on it. Good luck trying to
contact the supplier. Have been trying now for weeks and no call back or
follow up. Save your money and buy something else. This is an awful product.
You will regret purchasing it!!!

Long weekend movie choices

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
Epic
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Rule #1 for titling a motion picture: never provide false hopes to prospective viewers that cannot be lived up to. Forgettable to the point where its memory begins to fade the moment the film is over, "Epic" diverts only in that it's not strictly a chore to watch. Faint praise, to be sure, and epically un-epic.

Fast & Furious 6
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Running a needlessly exorbitant 130 minutes, one must sit through 90 full minutes of macho posturing, moronic dialogue, and virtual dead air before the first halfway memorable action set-piece arrives. From there, things finally take off, but the diverting third act is not enough to make up for the endurance test of the first two.

Frances Ha
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities - The near-incomparable Greta Gerwig gives Frances a fire, an exuberance, and a three-dimensional uniqueness that ensures the viewer never sways from her side. Frances—and Gerwig—is a sympathetic, naturally funny original, earning every right to be happy and successful.

The Hangover Part III
★★ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - In spite of its off-putting elements, "The Hangover Part III" is better than it probably deserves to be. When so many trilogies start strong and finish with a whimper, "The Hangover" movies set the bar very low to begin with, and then lower still, just so the only way to go for the finale would be up.

Star Trek!

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/13_startrekintodarkness.htm> Star
Trek Into Darkness
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A breathtaking, seat-gripping extravaganza of near-endless
scope, excitement, and personality. Giving all impending summer 2013
tentpoles a reason to be intimidated, "Star Trek Into Darkness" should
safely reintroduce audiences to just how much fun moviegoing can be.

Movies

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week:
The Great Gatsby
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - A sensory wonderland both intimate and vast as director Baz Luhrmann creates an immersive onscreen world that, for all of its bold and fancy reimaginings, remains accurate to F. Scott Fitzgerald's sumptuous literary descriptions. It's a lot to drink in all at once and a sight to behold, yes, but one that never loses sight of the heartstrings it keeps plucking.

Gardening or movies this weekend?

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/13_happyhouse.htm> The Happy House
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

NYC - If writer-director D.W. Young hasn't made a particularly meaningful
movie, he has made an original one. "The Happy House" is nothing if not a
fresh mixture of colorful characters, questionable manners, and rusty,
suddenly-new-again horror conventions.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/i/13_ironman3.htm> Iron Man 3
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - A disappointingly middling start to this year's summer movie
season that, nevertheless, also serves as a fitting personal conclusion to
self-deprecating scientist/entrepreneur/makeshift superhero Tony Stark.
"Iron Man 3" might not be a total bust, but it does result in one big "meh."
