Labor Day weekend at the movies

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/13_devilspass.htm> Devil's Pass
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - An overt copycat of 1999's "The Blair Witch Project,"
the picture hitting every single narrative beat of that innovative box-
office phenomenon. There are no two ways about it; "Devil's Pass" is
derivative. Where the film partially redeems itself is in a twisty zinger
of a conclusion that, finally, is not only giddily original, but also
entirely unexpected.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/g/13_getaway.htm> Getaway
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Revved up to a permanently high octane, "Getaway" is an auto-
centric action-thriller so relentless it makes "Fast and Furious 6" look
like "Driving Miss Daisy." The bottom line is there is a heaping helping of
destruction on hand, but it's hard to be too critical when a film dares to
be as preposterous yet flashy as this one.

Opening this week Part 2

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week (Part Two):
Ain't Them Bodies Saints
★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities - Exasperating in its disjointed pacing, ceaselessly static tempo, and refusal to provide context and development for its nearly comatose characters, this lethargic art-house drama confuses painterly cinematography for overall cinematic distinctiveness.

Monsters Wanted
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Now on DVD - An always engrossing documentary about the ambitious 2011 preparation of the Asylum Haunted Scream Park in Louisville, Kentucky, "Monsters Wanted" is something of a successor to 2002's outstanding "Hell House"—minus all of the religious politics.

The World's End
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - "The World's End" gets things all wrong, its sarcastic humor more often than not limp and its play for drama tone-deaf and overbearing when a lighter touch might have made a greater impact in regards to themes about reluctantly growing up and coming to terms with guilt from the past.

You're Next
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - So superbly conceived and carried out, so draped in tension yet also naturally funny in its tonal command, that it seems nearly impossible not to walk out of the film on a nervy, satisfied high. Horror cinema fans, a word of advice: rally together and absolutely do not let "You're Next" pass you by.

almost the end of summer

    Opening This Week (Part One):

    Drinking Buddies
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD Now, Select Cities Friday - A shrewd, earthy slice-of-life. Small in size yet keenly adept at human observation, films like "Drinking Buddies" are a pleasurable respite from the routine of seeing characters controlled by bigger-than-life plot hooks one can only find in cinema and television.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
    (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Demons, angels, werewolves, oh my! Playing much like bad fan fiction from an immature, lovelorn teenage girl who's seen "Twilight," "Beastly," "Star Wars," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" too many times, "The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones" is interminable gobbledygook.

Movies before school starts

    Opening This Week:

    Lee Daniels' The Butler
    ★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The clichés come fast and furious in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," as numerous as the amount of times the viewer is reminded this is Serious Oscar Fare™. Valiant in its journey through semi-recent American history, but just because a motion picture is sympathetic to a cause doesn't necessarily make it worthwhile.

    Kick-Ass 2
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - This superior sequel cranks the bloody beatings, gorings, and―most important―heart up to eleven while building upon a sort of mythology ambitiously operatic enough to hang with the big-boy crime fighters that are Spider-Man, Superman and the Caped Crusader.

    Lovelace
    ★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - An undernourished biographical drama, directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman appearing to have spent more time perfecting the period costumes and catchy 1970s soundtrack than on telling a fully formed, well-defined story. When it comes to big-screen biopics, "Lovelace" never makes it past the shallow end of the pool.

    Prince Avalanche
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - Lean and observational, "Prince Avalanche" relies upon the performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch to guide the way, their tricky, intermittently combative interplay a balancing act that, at any moment, could cross over from dramatically involving to over-the-top and annoying. Thankfully, neither actor lets this happen.

    Terms and Conditions May Apply
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - A riveting, fast-paced documentary about our increasing lack of privacy in a world overrun by social media, "Terms and Conditions May Apply" is skillfully pieced together like a first-rate thriller. If the information it discloses isn't exactly revelatory, it does serve as a sobering modern-day cautionary tale.

Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews
Opening This Week (Part Two):
Elysium
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Gorgeous, sturdily paced, and involving. "Elysium" has a number of problems, many of them related to not fulfilling the premise's full aptitude. At the same time, a film that brings to the table this many great aspirations shouldn't be marginalized when so many major summer movies are content to act on autopilot.

Jug Face
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD & Select Cities - A well-acted, genre-busting curiosity, "Jug Face" is bold of premise and disquieting in its low-key mounting. The sound directorial debut of Chad Crawford Kinkle, the film treats its out-there flights of fancy with such a naturalism it often seems weirdly plausible.

The Lifeguard
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
Sharing an alarming number of similarities with 2012's more insightful Melanie Lynskey-starring "Hello I Must Be Going," "The Lifeguard" doesn't exactly win points for originality, but it is affecting all the same, scripted with care and showing that Bell is fully capable of diversifying the types of film roles she takes on.

Passion
★★½ (out of ★★★★)
VOD Now, Select Cities Aug 30 - Uplifts the routine with an artistic savvy and two wickedly good performances from Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams. "Passion" doesn't really break any new ground for Brian De Palma, and yet as a technical exercise it's nice to see him back in his element.

Planes
★½ (out of ★★★★)
Nationwide - Cursed with a mundane script and computer animation that looks like a subpar imitation of Pixar's sterling, detail-oriented work. Is it wrong to expect more from the Disney brand when they've proven they can do so much better than this disposable trifle?

The Spectacular Now
★★★ (out of ★★★★)
Select Cities - By the sound of the setup, prospective viewers of "The Spectacular Now" probably think they've seen this all before and could guess the trajectory of the plot and all its conflicts in their sleep. They'd be wrong. The film is rough, honest and accurate, its emotional beats hitting at unanticipated moments.

Weekend movies

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/13_bluejasmine.htm> Blue Jasmine
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - Guided by a powerhouse turn from Cate Blanchett-really,
it's less a performance than a force of nature-this grievously funny,
shrewdly devastating character study is as focused and emotionally
rewarding as anything Woody Allen has made in the twenty-first century.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/c/13_canyons.htm> The Canyons
★★ (out of ★★★★)

VOD & Select Cities - "The Canyons," which isn't nearly as seedy or
decadent or provocative as it wants to be, is not going to be toppling any
cinematic status quo anytime soon. Lindsay Lohan is riveting to watch in a
way that only punctuates how phony the rest of the film is. Simply put,
"The Canyons" doesn't deserve her.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/13_smurfs2.htm> The Smurfs 2
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Little kids will still enjoy "The Smurfs 2," but whereas the
inaugural movie appeared to try to be a family film of quality, this one
has a derivative, made-by-committee feel. Hopefully, a bit more care will
be dedicated to the inevitable "The Smurfs 3," the kind not driven by big
paychecks.
