    Lee Daniels' The Butler

    Nationwide - The clichés come fast and furious in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," as numerous as the amount of times the viewer is reminded this is Serious Oscar Fare™. Valiant in its journey through semi-recent American history, but just because a motion picture is sympathetic to a cause doesn't necessarily make it worthwhile.

    Nationwide - This superior sequel cranks the bloody beatings, gorings, and―most important―heart up to eleven while building upon a sort of mythology ambitiously operatic enough to hang with the big-boy crime fighters that are Spider-Man, Superman and the Caped Crusader.

    Lovelace
    ★★ (out of ★★★★)

    VOD & Select Cities - An undernourished biographical drama, directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman appearing to have spent more time perfecting the period costumes and catchy 1970s soundtrack than on telling a fully formed, well-defined story. When it comes to big-screen biopics, "Lovelace" never makes it past the shallow end of the pool.

    Prince Avalanche

    VOD & Select Cities - Lean and observational, "Prince Avalanche" relies upon the performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch to guide the way, their tricky, intermittently combative interplay a balancing act that, at any moment, could cross over from dramatically involving to over-the-top and annoying. Thankfully, neither actor lets this happen.

    Terms and Conditions May Apply
    ★★★ (out of ★★★★)

    Select Cities - A riveting, fast-paced documentary about our increasing lack of privacy in a world overrun by social media, "Terms and Conditions May Apply" is skillfully pieced together like a first-rate thriller. If the information it discloses isn't exactly revelatory, it does serve as a sobering modern-day cautionary tale.
