An average weekend for the movies....

Opening This Week:

★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - As a writer-director-actor-producer-editor making his
feature debut on all of the above, Evan Glodell has an undeniable
filmmaker's eye. It's well-made, yes, but also annoyingly arch,
self-absorbed, and contrived. "Bellflower" is a motion picture most viewers
will probably find themselves admiring more than actually liking.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/b/11_brightonrock.htm> Brighton Rock
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities (OnDemand Aug 31) - A revisionist's adaptation of the classic
novel, "Brighton Rock" moves the setting from the 1930s to 1964, but
otherwise gets to the heart of its tragic underpinnings. Titillatingly open
to interpretation and acted with standout gusto by virtual unknowns Sam
Riley and Andrea Riseborough, the doomed romance is where the film earns a
sneaky indelible force.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/11_dbaotd.htm> Don't Be Afraid of
the Dark
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Appreciably R-rated but never terribly gory, the scare factor
mostly comes from the sound of malevolent whispers and the anticipation of
who—or what—is lurking in the shadows. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" works
its way under the skin with a sophistication not often seen anymore in
today's horror pictures. It might be a tad naïve, but it's also elegant and
suitably sinister where it counts.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/j/11_juliaseyes.htm> Julia's Eyes
★★½ (out of ★★★★)

OnDemand & Select Cities - "Julia's Eyes" gathers unmistakable inspiration
from Alfred Hitchcock, Henri-Georges Clouzot and Brian De Palma, and this
firm grasp on all things suspenseful is enough to overcome a film that, when
it all comes down to it, is more a conventional cat-and-mouse game than a
truly satisfying or ingenious mystery.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/o/11_ouridiotbrother.htm> Our Idiot
Brother
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The story rarely takes time to breathe or bothers to explore
with any depth the key relationships that the movie is supposedly all about.
What is left are some amusing situations and a lead performance better than
it should be under the amateurish circumstances. It's a film that, simply
put, is difficult to care for or get excited about.
