Dustin Putman's Movie Reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/13_darkskies.htm> Dark Skies
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Sure to go down as one of 2013's early sleeper surprises, an
intensely evocative, absolutely spine-tingling thriller that paints an
empathetic portrait of realistically strained modern-day suburban
domesticity before little by little introducing a rasping pall of doom
decidedly a bit more troubling than some missed mortgage payments.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/s/13_snitch.htm> Snitch
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Homogenized by an insistent PG-13 rating that renders its
violent climactic showdowns bland and spineless. There is little room for
denial that "Snitch" means well, but there also isn't anything to give it
those extra shots of immediacy, grit and verve it so desperately needs.

Dustin Putnam's movie reviews

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/13_hanselandgretel.htm> Hansel &
Gretel: Witch Hunters
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Expends its standout moments by the ten-minute mark and can
never quite capture the same palpable danger, atmosphere, and imagination
again. What follows isn't bad so much as it is uninspired, running in
circles while wearing the viewer down with one too-quickly-cut action scene
after the next.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/m/13_movie43.htm> Movie 43
★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Appalling, sleazy, disgusting, and an offense against juvenile
humor. Alas, all the talent in Hollywood and beyond couldn't make "Movie 43"
watchable. It will, however, go down in infamy, that you can be sure of.

3 out of 4 this weekend

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/a/12_amour.htm> Amour (2012)
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - "Amour" is a tough, demanding drama, one that many viewers
will not wish to face precisely because of its truthfulness. A confident,
lovingly articulated mood piece about a subject that is universal, yet
rarely told.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/g/13_gangstersquad.htm> Gangster Squad
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - It's the sort of film that fails to give its audience anything
but a shrug to take away with them. Judged on its own singular merits, the
picture is as terminally empty as it is slick, at any point threatening to
puncture itself with its own put-on-a-show, go-getter artificiality.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/h/13_hauntedhouse.htm> A Haunted House
½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - It only took two weeks into 2013 for a film to reserve a
surefire place on my end-of-the-year bottom ten. "A Haunted House" runs a
scant 86 minutes, but it's a painful 86 minutes, seeming twice as long and
more punishing by the second.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/z/12_zdt.htm> Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Dense, gritty, sumptuous, and free of superfluous melodrama.
There is something immensely gratifying with being made privy to the
tireless work and maneuverings of the military and CIA, the viewer
experiencing the jobs vicariously through the figures on screen.

A football option for New Year's Day

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_promisedland.htm> Promised Land
★★★ (out of ★★★★)

Select Cities - "Promised Land" moves at an unassuming, surprisingly
intoxicating pace, aware of the ebbs and flows and overall qualities that
come with living outside the big cities. If only for a few hours, it's a
place worth visiting.

The best and worst of 2012

<http://www.dustinputman.com/essays_2012bestworst.htm> The Year in Review:
2012's Best and Worst

If we're going strictly by numbers, 2012 was the best year for cinema in at
least a decade. This was a deeply reassuring year at the movies, and one can
only hope this mini-resurgence of inspiration will continue into 2013.

A movie instead of football?

Opening This Week:

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/d/12_djangounchained.htm> Django
Unchained
★★★½ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - The late holiday season's most dizzyingly imaginative and
thoroughly pleasing release, an end-of-year jewel as chock-full of sizzling
performances as it is bursting with busted knee caps and spurting innards.

<http://www.dustinputman.com/reviews/p/12_parentalguidance.htm> Parental
Guidance
★★ (out of ★★★★)

Nationwide - Crystal and Midler class it up as much as they can and the
movie's central message about not taking your loved ones for granted is
simple and sweet. It's just such a shame "Parental Guidance" is otherwise
so darn dumb.
